The courteous Knight begs for comedy, comedy in its widest sense, the contrary of tragedy, a story with a happy ending instead of a sad one, a story where the hero succeeds instead of failing. As for the Host, he bluntly condemns as sterile this ‘tragedie’, where what is done cannot be undone. He calls on the Nun’s Priest for what is wanted –

Telle us swich thyng as may oure hertes glade –
